Type species: Vieja panamensis Fernández-Yepez, 1969 (=V. maculicauda Regan, 1905))
Distinctive characters: Stawikowski & Werner (1998) give following characteristics for the genus:
- High body (1.5 to 2 times in standard length)
- Length of the caudal peduncle (1.5 to 1.7 times higher than long)
- Teeth bicuspid or conical (differentiates Vieja from Chuco, see below)
Vieja is only weakly defined, probably because Vieja sensu Kullander (2003) may be polyphyletic (see below for characteristics of groups proposed).

Distribution: Atlantic and Pacific slope from South México (Rio Papaloapan system) to Panama.
Further information: A number of alternative groupings have been proposed so far, splitting Vieja sensu Kullander (2003) and Miller (2005) into 2 to 5 groups depending on the author.Although the genus is certainly very heterogeneous, none of the groups is clearly defined. The phylogenetic relationships among the species included is very poorly resolved and further studies are needed in order to eliminate the current hypotheses.

Characteristics differentiating the three species from Paratheraps supposedly include the lack of a longitudinal stripe, the presence of a distinct spot on the caudal peduncle and the shape of the mouth.

Already Stawikowski & Werner (1998) consider Paratheraps as a synonym to Vieja.

Fernandez-Yepez (1969) differentiated Chuco from Vieja by having longer ventral fins (reaching the beginning of the anal fin) and conical teeth (rather than bicuspid ones).
At the end, there are three species left that have been hypothesized not to be related to the above groups:

V. tuyrensis
The generic assigment of the southermost Vieja is disputed. Some hypothesized a close relationship to Archocentrus s.s. Evidence from molecular phylogenies indicate that the species may in fact form a monophyletic group with T. sieboldii (Concheiro Perez, pers. comm.).
