Type species: Hypsophrys unimaculatus Agassiz, 1859
Distinctive characters: In the first description of Hypsophrys, Agassiz (1859) only mentioned the similarity to Sparus auratus (Sparidae, a species from the Mediterranian). Regan (1905) gave distinctive characteristics for Hypsophrys (his section 7):
Species currently included:
| Hypsophrys nicaraguensis | C, P |
| C=CRC Catalogue, P=Note on phylogeny |
Distribution: Atlantic slope, from the San Juan drainage, including Lake Nicaragua, in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, to the Matina River drainage in Costa Rica (Bussing, 1998).
Behavior/ Ecology: Hypsophrys is the only Central American cichlid known to have non-adhesive eggs.
Further information: Molecular phylogenies indicate a potential close relationship to Neetroplus.
