On a good friend recommendation, I had recently the nice opportunity to visit a new home page dealing with Cichlids, and it was certainly an amazing surprise. My eyes opened wide as I browsed through the sections of one of the best Cichlid pages (or any other fish pages by the way) I have ever seen, it was so good! The page, of scientific nature, was constructed after a year of hard work by Michael K. Oliver, and it deals with Malawi cichlids; "The Cichlid Fishes of Lake Malawi, Africa". This specialized, very well done site, has already a wealth of information about the classification of Malawian cichlids (and other Malawian fish), and is just it's beginning! You can find from the resumes and pictures of the main Ichthyologists that have worked with Malawian cichlids, to satellite pictures of lake Malawi, provided by NASA. Cichlids are described from a non technical and a technical point of view. Malawian cichlids are separated into haplochromines, mbuna, tilapias and non-endemic, and are listed alphabetically by genus and by color pattern. A monogram indicating the color pattern of the species is shown in each case. A drawing or picture is then available for most of the species listed (175 color pictures representing more than 115 Haplochromine species, in all 39 genera.). A picture listing is also available. Mbunas, although some illustrated, are also promised to be illustrated in full soon. Answers to some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about Malawi cichlids and their classification, species flocks, and the Lake itself, are available. Also, a huge list of references on Malawian cichlids is given. As a curiosity some old maps of Lake Malawi are as well available. Michael's page in doubtlessly a great source of information about your favorite finned friends, and if this is the start, I can't think of limits for the development of his page.
