I did give a long and very pleasant visit to Ron Coleman's "Cichlid research home page" which many of you I am sure have visited or at least heard of. The page, nicely organized, presents a wealth of information about cichlids. it's objective is better explained by Ron's words "It is my opportunity to share some of my knowledge about cichlids, but also an opportunity for me to tap into the tremendous wealth of experience in the hobbyist community. It is my hope that the Cichlid Research Home Page can start to bridge the gap between scientist and hobbyist". Three main sections comprising the page set are easily accessed from the introductory page, the first, devoted to cichlids in general. shows among other things a Phylogeny tree of the cichlid family developed by Melanie Stiassny, showing the relationship and possible evolution path of the major groups of cichlids existent. An useful list of cichlid scientific and common names is also available in this section, as well of some photographs of several species. Some other features are a list of tips and techniques for cichlid keeping and a Cichlids observations section (In their starting stage). The second section contains the main purpose of the page, the research projects. Most interesting is Ron's "Cichlid egg project" a research in which Ron is trying to understand the relationship between the egg size of several cichlid species and their parental care and biology. An overview of the project as well as a huge list of measured data are available there. You can also participate! Other projects are the Jurupari project initiated by Pat Chefalo to utilize the INTERNET to further our identification and understanding of the Satanoperca jurupari complex of cichlids and the embryo project by Danny Kent of the Vancouver Public Aquarium, who intents to establish a relationship between the pattern of blotches in cichlid fry and the identification and relationship of the species they belong. The third section of The "Cichlid Research home page" is a list of sources for more cichlid information, a nice list of Cichlid societies, a new cichlid aquarists e-mail listing and a list to several nice other cichlid pages are available. In resume, The "Cichlid Research Home Page" is one of the best resources of Cichlid information on the net, with a fantastic potential given the involvement of Ron Coleman in its project. Give it a visit If you haven't done so, and if you have, give it another one. © Copyright 1996, Juan Miguel Artigas Azas |
