Original description as Neochromis omnicaeruleus:

• Seehausen, Ole & E. Lippitsch, N. Bouton and H. Zwennes. 1998. "Mbipi, the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Victoria: description of three new genera and fifteen new species". Ichthyological Explorations of Freshwaters. v. 9 (n. 2), pp. 129-228 (crc00316) (abstract).

Conservation: Neochromis omnicaeruleus is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2010). Although all Lake Victoria should be considered fragile habitat, the environment where Neochromis omnicaeruleus is found can be regarded as stable and pristine. It also seems to thrive in these ecosystems with healthy reproducing populations.
