Original description as Chromidotilapia finleyi:

• Trewavas, Ethelwyn; 1974; "The freshwater fishes of rivers Mungo and Meme and Lakes Kotto, Mboandong and Soden, west Cameroon"; Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History) Zoology Series; .

Conservation: Benitochromis finleyi is not evaluated by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (2008).
