Original description as Zeus scalaris:

• Lichtenstein, M.H.C.; 1823; "Verzeichnis der Doubletten des Zoologischen Museums der Koeniglichen Universität zu Berlin nebst beschreibung vieler bisher unbekannter Arten von Säugethieren, Voegeln, Amphibien und Fischen"; Verzeichniss Doubletten Zoologischen Museums Universität Berlin; i-x + pp. 1-118.

Synonyms:

• Platax scalaris Cuvier, 1831, with type locality at Brazil. determiner: Kull&er, S. O., 1986.
• Plataxoides dumerilii De Castelnau, 1855, with type locality at Para, Brazil. determiner: Kull&er, S. O., 1986 .
• Pterophyllum eimekei Ahl, 1928, with type locality at Rio Negro of Amazon River. determiner: Kull&er, S. O., 1986 .
