Original description as Haplochromis turkanae:

Greenwood, P. H.; 1974; "The Haplochromis species (Pisces: Cichlidae) of Lake Rudolf, East Africa"; Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History) Zoology Series; v. 27 (n. 3) pp. 141-165.

Conservation: Thoracochromis turkanae is not evaluated by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (2008).
