Original description as Ptychochromis makira:
Conservation: Ptychochromis makira is not evaluated by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (2008). Although once common throughout the region, Ptychochromis makira has suffered a severe decline in abundance in recent years, according to local fishermen. Little original riparian vegetation remains in the lower reaches of the Antainambalana River basin. Fishing pressure is high in the region surrounding Maroansetra and habitat degradation has been widespread throughout the Antainambalana basin. Local fishermen report that the species is now rare (Stiassny & Sparks, 2006). | |||
