Original description as Mbipia lutea:

• Seehausen, Ole & E. Lippitsch, N. Bouton and H. Zwennes. 1998. "Mbipi, the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Victoria: description of three new genera and fifteen new species". Ichthyological Explorations of Freshwaters. v. 9 (n. 2), pp. 129-228 (crc00316) (abstract).

Conservation: Mbipia lutea is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (VU) vulnerable (2010).
