Original description as Neochromis rufocaudalis:

• Seehausen, Ole & E. Lippitsch, N. Bouton and H. Zwennes. 1998. "Mbipi, the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Victoria: description of three new genera and fifteen new species". Ichthyological Explorations of Freshwaters. v. 9 (n. 2), pp. 129-228 (crc00316) (abstract).

Conservation: Neochromis rufocaudalis is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2010). Secure populations exist throughout Mwanza Gulf.
