Original description as Lamprologus christyi:

• Trewavas, Ethelwynn & M. Poll. 1952. "Three new species and two new subspecies of the genus Lamprologus, Cichlid fishes of Lake Tanganyika". Bulletin de l'Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique. 28 (50); pp 1-16 (crc00055).

Conservation: Neolamprologus christyi is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (VU) vulnerable (2006).
