Original description as Melanochromis loriae:

• Johnson, Donald. 1975. "More new Malawi cichlids". Today's Aquarist. 2 (1); po 16-18 (crc00085).

Synonyms:

• Melanochromis parallelus Burgess & Axelrod, 1976, With type locality at Lake Malawi. Determiner: Konings, 2012.

Conservation: Melanochromis loriae is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (VU) vulnerable (2006). Populations in peril are not known although it is only very common at Ndumbi Rocks, Likoma Island; at other localities Melanochromis loriae is often not regularly encountered.
