Original description as Neolamprologus ventralis:

Conservation: Neolamprologus ventralis is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened speciesDue to the depth at which this species is found, as well as its limited appeal in the hobby, it is unlikely that this species will be affected by over collecting.
