Original description as Haplochromis oligacanthus:

• Regan, Charles Tate. 1922. "The Classification of the Fishes of the Family Cichlidae.--II. On African and Syrian Genera Not Restricted to the Great Lakes". Annals and Magazine of Natural History. v. 9(n. 10), p 252 (crc00107).

Conservation: Ctenochromis oligacanthus is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2010).
