Synonyms:

• Tilapia dubia Lönnberg, 1904, With type locality at Lake Barombi-ba-Kotta, Cameroon Mountain, Cameroon. Determiner: Stiassny, 1991.
• Tilapia meeki Pellegrin, 1911, With type locality at Grand-Bassam Lagoon, Ivory Coast. Determiner: Cadwallader, 1983.

Conservation: Tilapia mariae is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2010).
