Original description as Tilapia guinasana:

• Trewavas, Ethelwynn. 1936. "Dr. Karl Jordan's expedition to South-West Africa and Angola: The fresh-water fishes". Novitates Zoologicae. vol. 40: pp. 63-74 (crc00982).

Conservation: Tilapia guinasana is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (CR) critically endangered (2007). Tilapia guinasana is narrowly endemic and is threatened by the introduction of other fish species as well as use and depletion of groundwater.
