Original description as Apistogramma baenschi:

• Römer, Uwe & Ingo Hahn, Erika Römer, David P. Soares & M. Wöhler. 2004. "Apistogramma baenschi sp. n. Description of an other geophagine Dwarf-Cichlid (Teleostei: Perciformes) from Peru". Das Aquarium. (no. 422): pp. 15-30 ([Aug. 2004]:) (crc00188).

Conservation: Apistogramma baenschi is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened speciesThe habitat is extremely fragile because of the limited distribution of the species. Overfishing may be a concern, because the species is popular and many exporters are collecting them in large numbers. There is also extensive logging in the area.
