Pseudotropheus saulosi Konings, 1990
Original description as Pseudotropheus saulosi:
- Konings, Ad. 1990. "Descriptions of Six New Malawi Cichlids". Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine. 38 (11): pp. 110-129 (crc00111).
Conservation: Pseudotropheus saulosi is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (VU) vulnerable (2006). During the last decade several collectors of ornamental fish have concentrated on catching large numbers of P. saulosi and as a result the species is becoming scarce. When I last visited the reef (September 2010) there were only a few specimens to be seen. It would be a shame when aquarists’ demands for wild-caught fish would extirpate this beautiful mbuna which is available in large quantities from professional breeders. Let’s hope that the current economic downturn slows down the removing of rare Malawi cichlids from the wild.
