Etymology: The species has not been officialy described. The provisional name Mixteco was coined as it refers to a Mesoamerican people from the state of Oaxaca in Mexico, where the fish inhabits.

Inhabited countries: Mexico (endemic).

Localities: Río Chalchijiapan (Mexico, native), Rio Grande (Mexico, native), Río Solosuchil (Mexico, native), Uxpanapa River (Mexico, native).

Conservation: Thorichthys sp. 'mixteco' is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species
