Original description as Paratilapia nototaenia:

• Boulenger, George Albert. 1902. "Diagnoses of new cichlid fishes discovered by Mr. J. E. S. Moore in Lake Nyassa". Annals and Magazine of Natural History. (Ser. 7) 69-71 (crc00067).

Synonyms:

• Haplochromis atritaeniatus Regan, 1922, With type locality at Lake Malawi. Determiner: Snoeks, 2004.
• Haplochromis oculatus Trewavas, 1935, With type locality at Monkey Bay, Lake Malawi. Determiner: Snoeks, 2004.

Conservation: Buccochromis nototaenia is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2006).
