Original description as Crenicichla zebrina:

• Montaña, Carmen & H. López-Hernández & D.C. Taphorn. 2008. "A new species of Crenicichla (Perciformes: Cichlidae) from the Ventuari River, Upper Orinoco River Basin, Amazonas State, Venezuela". Zootaxa. (n. 1856): pp. 33–40 (2008) (crc01608) (abstract).

Conservation: Crenicichla zebrina is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened speciesthe species seems to be rare at the type locality, but the actual distribution in the tributaries of the Ventuari is still unknown. .
