Original description as Pelmatochromis intermedius:

• Boulenger, George Albert. 1916. "Catalogue of the fresh-water fishes of Africa in the British Museum (Natural History).". Trustees of the British Museum (Natural History), London. vol. IV, pp. i-xxvii; 1-392 (crc03476) (abstract).

Conservation: Tylochromis intermedius is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2010).
