Original description as Haplochromis ushindi:

• van Oijen, Martien J.P. 2004. "Haplochromis ushindi spec. nov., the largest piscivorous cichlid in the Mwanza Gulf area of Lake Victoria (East Africa) before the Nile perch upsurg". Zoologische Mededelingen. v. 78: pp. 249-255 (crc01469).

Conservation: Haplochromis ushindi is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (CR) critically endangered (2010).
