Original description as Haplochromis turkanae:

• Greenwood, Peter Humphry. 1974. "The Haplochromis species (Pisces: Cichlidae) of Lake Rudolf, East Africa". Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History) Zoology Series. v. 27 (n. 3) pp. 141-165 (crc01429).

Conservation: Thoracochromis turkanae is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2006).
