Original description as Paratilapia toddi:

• Boulenger, George Albert. 1905. "On a small collection of fishes from the Kasai river (Congo)". Annals and Magazine of Natural History. (Ser. 7); pp. 640-642 (crc01466).

Conservation: Haplochromis toddi is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (DD) data deficient (2010).
