Original description as Tilapia stigmatogenys:

• Boulenger, George Albert. 1913. "Description d'un poisson nouveau recueilli à Luluabourg (Congo Belge)". Revue de Zoologie et Botanique Africaines. Vol 2 (1912-13); pp. 394-395 (crc01463).

Conservation: Thoracochromis stigmatogenys is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2010).
