Original description as Haplochromis plagiodon:

• Regan, Charles Tate & E. Trewavas. 1928. "Four new cichlid fishes from Lake Victoria". Annals and Magazine of Natural History. (Ser. 10) pp. 224-226 (crc01361).

Conservation: Haplochromis plagiodon is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (VU) vulnerable (2010).
