Etymology: After the type locality at Puente de Ixtla, Morelos [Mexico].
Type locality: Rio Ixtla at Puente de Ixtla, Morelos, México..
Distribution: In the lowlands of the pacific Coast of México from Rio Ameria southeast to Rio Papagayo, in the states of Colima, Jalisco, Michoacan and Guerrero.
Inhabited countries: Mexico (endemic).
Localities: Chilapa (Mexico, native), Papagayo (Mexico, native), Rio Nexapa (Mexico, native), Rio Tecoloyan (Mexico, native).
Conservation: exCichlasoma istlanum is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species
