Original description as Haplochromis macrognathus:

• Regan, Charles Tate. 1922. "The Cichlid Fishes of Lake Victoria". Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London. v. 1: pp. 157-191 (crc00355).

Conservation: Prognathochromis macrognathus is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (CR) critically endangered (2010). This fish belongs to the predators of lake Victoria, it seems not present today as it was caught before 1980. So it is extinct at least critically endangered.
