Original description as Tilapia labriforma:

• Nichols, J. T. & F. R. La Monte. 1938. "Two new fishes from Lake Victoria". American Museum Novitates. (n. 1001) pp. 1-3 (crc01423).

Conservation: Haplochromis labriformis is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (DD) data deficient (2010).
