Original description as Haplochromis albolabris:

• Trewavas, Ethelwynn & D. F. E. Thys van den Audenaerde. 1969. "A new Angolan species of *Haplochromis* (Pisces, Cichlidae)". Mitteilungen aus dem Hamburgischen zoologischen Museum und Institut. 66; pp 237-239 (crc00194).

Conservation: Thoracochromis albolabris is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2007).
