Original description as Haplochromis cryptogramma:

• Greenwood, Peter Humphry & J. M. Gee. 1969. "A revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis species (Pisces, Cichlidae), part VII". Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History) Zoology Series. v. 18; n. 1; pp. 1-65 (crc01014).

Conservation: Prognathochromis cryptogramma is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (DD) data deficient (2010). We don't have data about the survival of this species in the Nile Perch Era, perhaps some found refugia against predation by the Nile Perch but nothing is known, as no records for this species have been made since its discovery. No collection has been reported from its reported distribution, so its seems logical to think that it may be endangered or extinct in the lake.
