Original description as Haplochromis venustus:

• Boulenger, George Albert. 1908. "Diagnoses of new fishes discovered by Capt. E. L. Rhoades in Lake Nyassa". Annals and Magazine of Natural History. (Ser. 8) pp. 238-243 (crc00068).

Synonyms:

• Haplochromis simulans Regan, 1922, With type locality at Lake Malawi. Determiner: Trewavas, 1935.

Conservation: Nimbochromis venustus is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2006).
