Original description as Paratilapia esox:

Synonyms:

• Rhamphochromis leptosoma Regan, 1922, With type locality at Lake Malawi. Determiner: Turner, 2004.
• Rhamphochromis lucius Ahl, 1927, With type locality at Langenburg (Lumbila), Lake Nyassa (Lake Malawi). Determiner: Konings, 2007.
• Rhamphochromis melanotus Ahl, 1927, With type locality at Langenburg (Lumbila), Lake Nyassa (Lake Malawi). Determiner: Trewavas, 1935.

Conservation: Rhamphochromis esox is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2006).
