Original description as Serranochromis janus:

• Trewavas, Ethelwynn. 1964. "A revision of the genus Serranchromis Regan (Pisces, Cichlidae)". Annales du Musée royal de l'Afrique Centrale (Série Zoology). (Serie 8, Sciences Zoologique); (n. 125); pp. 1-58 (crc01475).

Conservation: Serranochromis janus is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (DD) data deficient (2006).
