Original description as Paratilapia angusticeps:

• Boulenger, George Albert. 1907. "Descriptions of two new freshwater fishes discovered by Dr. W. J. Ansorge in Mossamedes, Angola". Annals and Magazine of Natural History. (Ser. 7) v. 20; n. 116; pp. 108-109 (crc01008).

Synonyms:

• Chromys levaillantii Castelnau , 1861, With type locality at Lake N'gami, Botswana, South Africa. Determiner: Skelton, 1991.
• Paratilapia kafuensis Boulenger , 1912, With type locality at Kafue River, Zambezi River system, Zambia. Determiner: Skelton, 1991.

Conservation: Serranochromis angusticeps is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2010).
