Original description as Pelmatochromis pulcher:

• Boulenger, George Albert. 1901. "On the fishes collected by Dr. W. J. Ansorge in the Niger Delta". Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London. vol. 1: pp 4-10 (crc00039).

Synonyms:

• Pelmatochromis aurocephalus Meinken, 1960, With type locality at Off Chipoka Island, Lake Malawi. Determiner: Stiassny, 1991.
• Pelmatochromis camerunensis Thys van den Audenaerde, 1968, With type locality at Mumbo Island, Lake Malawi. Determiner: Lévêque, 1992.

Conservation: Pelvicachromis pulcher is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2010). P. pulcher is not threatened nor endangered.
