Original description as Lamprologus prochilus:

• Bailey, Reeve M & D.J. Stewart. 1977. "Cichlid fishes from Lake Tanganyika: additions to the Zambian fauna including two new species". Occasional Papers of the Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan. (n. 679), pp. 30 (crc00150).

Conservation: Neolamprologus prochilus is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2006).
