Original description as Tilapia ruvumae:

• Trewavas, Ethelwynn. 1966. "Fishes of the genus Tilapia with four anal spines in Malawi, Rhodesia, Mozambique and southern Tanzania". Revue de Zoologie et Botanique Africaines. pp. 50-62 (crc01454).

Conservation: Oreochromis placidus ruvumae is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2007).
