Original description as Oreochromis hunteri:
- Günther, Albert C. L. G.. 1889. "On some fishes from Kilima-Njaro District". Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London. 1889, pp. 70-72 (crc00706).
Conservation: Oreochromis hunteri is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (CR) critically endangered (2006).
