Note: Cryptoheros myrnae is on the CARES list because like all of the fishes found in the Sixaola River drainage, it is seriously endangered in the wild due the massive pollution of its habitat by the agrochemicals utilized in the large-scale culture of bananas. A comparable situation prevails in the case of C. nanoluteus. Indeed, given that large-scale banana culture dates further back in that part of Panama than it does on the Atlantic slope of Costa Rica, its situation in the wild may be even more critical than that of C. myrnae.
