Cyprichromis questions

Postby tanganyikafreak » Sat Aug 18, 2012 3:47 am

I have some questions about the Cyprichromis family, or more specific about Cyprichromis microlepidotus.

How can you see the difference in sexes?
I know with C. leptosoma and the 'Jumbo's' it's quite clear.
A brightly coloured male and a somewhat bleak female
Is this the same with C.microlepidotus?

At some places the name Cyprichromis microlepidotus Malassa pops up.

As far as my knowledge goes the family is devided in the lake as written below

C. leptosoma, the whole lake minus the Burundi waters
C. leptosoma sp. 'Jumbo', the southern regions.
C. Cyprichromis microlepidotus, the northern regions.
C. pavo, the southern regions.
C. zonatus, the southern regions.

However Malassa is in the most southern part of Tanzania, almost in Zambia :S
Is my knowledge (bookwork etc.) incorrect, or what?
No matter how life brings me down, looking at my beautiful daughter makes everything aaaaaaaaaaaaaalright! :D

What about Kigoma cyprichromis ? Surely these jumbos come from the northern half of the lake. Most of the cyps I've raised the differences in the sexes is pretty clear, either in size or coloration.
Just when you think you know it all, life has this way of humbling you.
All of parachromis and most of caquetaia growing out or breeding now.
