New Jags!! Few questions...

Postby fishman420 » Sun Apr 04, 2004 11:55 pm

I recently got 3 baby jags, I was wondering about how long it takes for them to get full grown?...I have 135g tank. And if anyone could fill me in on when/how their markings or coloring with change as they age??

What are the best species to go along with jags? are there any i should specifly stay away from??

Thanks

It would take around three years, but depends on your feedings and water management and maintenance. As they age, their vertical bars gradually replaced with speckles, especially on the lower part of the flank, head, fins and tail. Some males replace their vertical bars totally with speckles, which can be quite spectacular. Species to go along with jags are those which can grow to about the same size and have the same temperament, like those boisterous Central Americans like red devil, midas, Friedrichsthalii, mota, haiti etc. Try not to put too much as they can grow really big. Alternatively, you can also put more of those smaller Central Americans like Nicaraguense, firemouth, convict, Cuban etc. Jags are not particularly aggressive if the tank is spacious enough, so not to worry. All the best!

Speaking of jags, is there any information concerning the duration of the active reproductive stage of the female? Since this species is reported to have a life span well exceeding 10 years I wonder which is the oldest female fish reported to lay eggs.
