Geophagus sp."Sunshine Diamond Surinam"

Postby HaakonH » Thu Sep 15, 2011 2:45 pm

I just found a pic of these at the website of Limpid Aquarium, Taiwan:

They are labelled Geophagus sp."Sunshine Diamond Surinam", and I'm not quite sure what they may be. Anyone?

So, including "Surinam" in the name is - what? A misdirection so people look for the fish in the wrong place? G. taeniopareius is an Orinoco species, from a considerable distance west of Surinam. There are also some things about the fish in the photo that don't exactly match what I've had and seen as taeniopareius. Not saying it isn't, but it didn't strike me as taeniopareius at first look. Strong similarities, but not quite the same.

Surinamensis is a catch all name for commercially imprted fish with no locality data. I worked in the wholesale business for many years and we saw a lot of different fish that were imported as "surinamensis". I learned how to tell where they were actually from by what contaminants came in with them but I could never really figure out what was what back then.
