Lepidiolamprologus lemairii

Hello, this is not a Lepidiolamprologus. the genera Lepidiolamprologus always more than 61 scales in longitudinal, L. lemairii in less than 60.

Benoit, I am really curious how you can tell this just from a photo of the fishes head.

I just know the species, I do not trust a photo, but to more general observation and experience. So I refer to description of genres, and identification keys.

I just want to correct an error too common.

So what is it? It resembles the lemairii I am familiar with but without seeing the entire fish I am not sure that it is but I am not sure that it isn't and I kept them years ago and they were the real thing.

Yes I do, I have also searched images and I still can't see how anyone can say it it or isn't that fish based on the head shot. I know proper identifications are important.

Was there supposed to be a period after was and before I in that sentence? If so, you seem to say you are not sure in your first statement, and then you say you are sure what it is in your last statement.

Benoit is abosolutely correct in identifiying this very common, well known lamprologine from the lake.

Excuses me, but I do not really understand, this topic has a title, this is the species L. lemairii, but lemairii is a Neolamprologus, not a Lepidiolamprologus, this is just to correct the mistake there.

There is no need for another shot to be sure it's him, Neolamprologus lemairii.

My apoligies, I didn't understand that Benoit meant to say that it was not a Lepidiolamprologus. I did think it was lemairii. What I thought he was saying was it was not lemairii. The changing of names has been a constant problem, as things are shuffled from one to another. It has been obvious for example that the genus Rivulus (it was a catch all) contained many fish that were very different for example and needed to be revised (and it was recently). Lemairii were simply a Lamprologus when I had them (another catch all genus at one time).

So ends my confusion I hope and thank you for the explanation.

I suspect that sometime in the future it will not be a Neolamprologus either.

Hi all i think the original question was how to breed these fantastic fish i use flower pots siliconed to a piece of glass and a hole cut in the side of the pot about 7cm in diameter i have 2 pots on the one piece of glass and have had females in these pots at the same time with the one male gaurding them .When they have eggs they have their head in the pot and their tail out of the pot circulating water . my male lemairii is about 30cm long

my males are now about 25 cm long

Ok so now i am lost are we looking at two different that are similar looking and is my fish classed as someting else ?
