Program Preview: May, 2012

Jeremy Basch, our May guest, is the 4th and final in our series of Ohio-based speakers. Originally from Westlake, he now lives in Columbus.

Jeremy started keeping fish as a teenager, and soon was deep into the hobby. He worked at a local aquarium shop, and gradually but steadily acquired multiple tanks populated by a wide range of freshwater fish. He set up his first fishroom in 2004 and is currently on his 3rd design, which houses over a hundred aquariums. His interests have focused on South American Cichlids and catfish, as well as African killis.

Besides belonging to the OCA, Jeremy is a member of the Greater Cincinnati Aquarium Society, the American Killifish Association, the ACA and is chairman of the Columbus Area Fish Enthusiasts. His articles have been published by the CAFE Menu and the ACA’s Buntbarsche Bulletin. He is a regular Extravaganza attendee.

In 2010, Jeremy made an excursion into one of the most remote areas of the world, the Madre de Dios region of Peru. There he collected fish, inverts and plants in and around the Rio Pariamanu. This area has not been explored much by biologists, so many of the species he collected are potentially undescribed and possibly even new to science. We can look forward to seeing many species in his presentation that we’ve never seen before!

Hey all, just wanted to say thank you for having Jeremy speak at the May meeting. His talk was interesting and gave another view on a collection trip that was planned through a tour guide. Though he wasn't able to bring any fish home, it was still nice that he shared his experiences.

On a side note, Jeremy visited my home on Saturday and took some pictures of my tank setups. He also offered some advice for the fish room which should prove helpful. While I had a minor crisis with a canister filter shutdown and was in the middle of a massive water change on the tank, he was nonplussed with all the hoses and disarray during the visit.
