Xenotiapia ornatipinnis moliro firestream

hi to everyone i am new to this forum but have enjoyed reading the articals for a long time i recently purchased 10 X.ornatpinnis moliro fire strean and was wondering if anyone new if they where a true variant or a new name for X . simma i read Thomas Andersens artical in cichlid news magazine but still i am not sure as this fish only had a brief mention i have breed this fish and have about 13 badies and a female is holding at the moment

Hello Tony,

yes, it's likely you got the true Xenotilapia sima. Can you post some photos of your fish, that way we will be sure?

thanks Thomas i am glad my thoughts where similar to yours i will post some photos as soon as i work out how to do it new to that as well spend more time in fish room than on the computer

These fish are about 7 to 8cm i only see some colour when they are breeding love their huge eyes though

Well, I have tried to tell the importer of the original wild fish, that his fish are certainly not X. ornatipinnis, but X. sima, but it seems that he is a bit stuborn

hmmm fish names well i also have a fish that was purchased as sima and as your artical in cichlid news showed it has a longer face like you call boulengeri but my fish have more of of a yellow pattern not the black lines i will try and post some pic's are their variants on boulengeri

Yes, Xenotilapia boulengeri do show geographical variation - do you know where yours are from? Photos?

Yes, these are undoubtly X. boulengeri, can't say the collection locality though.

Thanks Tomas for your thoughts it is interesting to see how fish names get mixed up i guess the trouble is convincing people their fish has the wrong name do you know what Ad's opinion was on this subject

I am just new to the forum as well. Its good to see another Australian with an interest in the sandsifters.

I love your true X.Sima very nice looking fish (I like the shape of the head with massive eyes. Very endearing)

I am in northern NSW. If you are close by and you have juveniles to sell in the future I might be interested.

I currently have just bred some X.Flavipinnis and X.Spilopterus. I started with 9 Flav fry but am down to 8 (still very young).
I have 11 Spilopterus still have egg sacs at the moment but are going well.

I went down stairs tonight and have just found a different spilopterus female with a mouthful (Im very excited)

Anyway I will stop rambling

hi mark good to hear of someone else who keeps xenotiapia species in australia their are not a lot of people who do keep them but then they are not always easy to get . the moliro firestream eyes are so large that when viewed from above the tank they almost touch in the middle of the head. very different. interesting to watch courting each other as well anyway good luck with the fry

These are very good pictures thanks. I need to update the photo's of my adults they are a few years old now and look stunning yhey have huge eyes and good colour as in thomas's photo at the beginning of this post,and still a very piecefull fish

these are the same fish as my earlier photos ,this is definately a xeno that gets better with age they are now nearly 3 years old
