Crenicichla ID - Please Help ID

Postby elindra » Fri Feb 10, 2012 3:05 am

I bought this fish as a Tapajos 1. However, I don't think it is Tapajos 1 since I kept a male Tapajos 1 before and this looks nothing like it. I'm not even sure if it's Atabapo I because although it looks very red in the pictures, the body is really more orangey and the head and tail very red.

Really appreciate help on this. Thanks :)

C. sp Atabapo red and C. sp Tapajos I are red species which are very close to C. lugubris, having nearly the same melanic pattern when adult.
Maybe the difference is on the tail spot which is ocellated for C. sp Tapajos I and not for C. sp atabapo I

Tentatively I will say your fish is C. sp Atabapo, because the tail spot is not ocellated and quite big , and also because brazilian Crenicichla are very rare fish now.

I can not help with the ID. But man you would have love the speaker at the convention back in July 2011 who gave a speach from A-Z about all the different pikes.

Ok I understand that C.Lugubris Atabapo looks very similar to sp Atabapo. Can I know what is the difference?

Also what defines a sp Atabapo and Atabapo I? I really appreciate yr adv on this. What are the differences I'm supposed to look out for?

I don't like very much to use C. sp Atabapo I and sp Atabapo II for the reason you point out.

These two species are really different, the first one (C. sp Atabapo I or C. sp Atabapo red) is very close to C. lugubris and the best name should be Crenicichla sp aff. lugubris Atabapo, when adulte they have three dark blotches. The first one just behind the eye, the second behind the pectoral fin and the last on the tail. Depending the mood of the fish only the last one can be visible. Young fish have a pattern like a lot of the young of C. lugubris group

The second one (C. sp Atabapo II, C. sp Atabapo fire or simply C. sp Atabapo) is a very distinctive species when young. As adulte aren't (always) red I think the best name is C. sp Atabapo. When adulte they have a dark blotch behind the pectorale fin, a lacrymale stripe under the eye and a short row of small spot before the caudal pedoncule

You can find picture of the two species in the CRC catalog under the name C. sp lugubris Atabapo and C. sp Atabapo

Where is this CRC catalogue you speak about? Sorry but I'm very new here.

So can I say that C. sp Atabapo Red can vary in the intensity of red and may even be orangy?

And do you hv a picture of the C. Lugubris which I can compare against?

I hv always thought Atabapo is a type of Lugubris pike.

Really appreciate your time explaining to me.

An update of the fish. It's female afterall and I don't think it's sp Atabapo because of the tail spot. It reminds me more of the sp Tapajos I used to keep.

What do you guys think?
