Geophagus cf. argyrostictus "Aripuana" x 2?

Postby Andersp90 » Mon Jan 09, 2012 8:08 pm

Geophagus cf. argyrostictus "Aripuana" and Geophagus spec. Aripauana have really blown my mind.

But will these two species cross if kept in the same tank?

just to make sure we are all on the same page.

There is always a risk for cross-breeding when the same species are in a tank together. That being the case, generally when pairs are added to the tank, cichlids will prefer to spawn with their own type. This is not always the case, as some keeping archocentrus nigrofasciatus have experienced hybrids when both m/f were present in the tank.

I don't think these two species can cross as G aff. argyrostictus is a typical substrate spawner and the other one a mouth-brooder. But G. agryrostictus and similar species are quite aggressive for Geophagus, they need room as they grow to a large size and are very active, G. sp Aripuana is new in the hobby and even if I don't keep these species in my mind is not a good companion for G. argyrostictus (size and behavior)

I will start with spec aripuana first and then try and add the argyrostictus later.

Thx! :)

I dont think you will have any issues with cross breeding....as you can see Argyrostictus are very aggressive with thier females.
They just love a water change and will often show breeding behaviour after one. i would suggest a group of 6 or more.
Be Warned!!!! Once you have Argyrostictus, you will love them!!!
